With a chip, the A4 is no slouch, but not as fast as the Aero. My Garrett chip had 197HP and around 255 lb-ft of torque if I remember right. The chip mostly came into play at 3/4 or higher throttle. It was a fun car to drive with lots of power, the Aero has more effortless power as it comes on even at part throttle. As I said, it's quite similar to the TT 225 - any Aero owner should go drive the TT to see how similar the engine feels.
The 1.8T engine in any of the VW's or the A4 is a great engine at a great price - and with a $500 chip, it becomes more than competitive with cars costing 10-15k more. The A4 1.8 is a sport sedan bargain, and holds its value very well too.
