I Had always heard that SAABs depreciate fast, and (for example) hondas depreciate slow. Receintly, my wife and I bought a 2001 SE wagon over
a honda odyssey. I compared residual values to determine 5 yr costs.
Honda Odyssey EX: 12275 (45%)
SAAB 95 WGN SE: 13374 (33%)
However, depreciation is based on the residual price relative to the
list price. The Honda lists at 27200, the SAAB 39800.
However, the "out the door costs" are more like
Honda: 29500, SAAB: 30500 (what we paid).
When factoring that in, the 5 yr residual, as a percent of the price
paid is: 43.4% for the Honda, 43.9 for the SAAB.
So, based on actual price paid, the SAAB may hold its value as well
as the honda.
Another analysis is based on the price quated at Carmax (http://www.carmax.com).
DC area
2001 SAAB 9-5 Wagon: 29998 (10K miles)
2001 Honda Odyssey: 26598 (20K or 10K miles)
Honda Saab
New MSRP 27200 39800
Actual Cost 29500 30500
1 Yr Carmax 26598 29998
1yr % act 90% 98%
Any thoughts?
