The question isn't what edmunds says your car is worth, but rather what
the original owner says it cost. Currently there are $3000-$4000 dollar
dealer incentives on 2002 SAAB 9-5's. When I bought mine, edmunds reported no incentive; however, according to our dealer, there was $5500 in dealer incentives on 2001.
The nubers I gave are hard: what carmax sells for is non-negotialble. What I paid is a fact, what the odyssy was goingto cost seemed to be a fact.
You give an example where one number is unkown. You do not know what the person actually paid.
On to your example: you pain 21000 for a two year old var with 23000 miles on it. I am certain that the buyer did not pay MSRP of 39K, rather they paid probably 33-36K. That makes a difference.
My point is (was) when you factor in what people really pay, SAAB depreciation is not that bad. Another example: take a Lexus es300 vs saab 95. both have an MSRP of about 39000. After tw years, saab is worth 22000 and lexus is worth 29000. Saab actually cost 32000, lexus: 39000.
The lexus depreciated 26% from actual cost, the saab, 23%. Based on MSRP, the difference is more like: 44% saab, 26% lexus.
Another way to look at it: if I can buy an end of the year closeout for 10K under list, then a user 2001 saab has to be more than 10K under MSRP.
