GM/Saab is giving the dealer an extra incentive to move the product. IN december, it was $4k in "dealer cash", so take MSRP, sell at Invoice, then subtract the $4k incentive and you have a dealer making money with the Holdback vs Invoice, and the customer pocketing the dealer cash. Plus, the dealer gets "volume credit", which must provide some sort of sales incentive overall to hit a certain # of units.
The goal for Saab and GM right now is market share and gaining new users, they are not as concerned with profit margin per car. They have to build trial, acceptance, and market share.
That's how they got me, a new Saab user and over time, potentially a repeat buyer, and with more product, perhaps a buyer of more than one Saab at a time.
