I have had all 3: a number of C900s, a 9000 Aero and a 9-5 Aero.
Frankly, they have all been ultra reliable. I am surprised that you find the 9000 unreliable.
I think that you need to keep these cars well maintained, and if you do they will reward you. If you buy them used, expect to spend some time and money to bring them "up to snuff". The amount of each will depend on the life it lead in the hands of its previous owner.
I don't think 100k is anything to be afraid of. But if the car you are looking at needs a head gasket and a clutch at 100k, I think you can assume it was driven hard. So consider that.
the 9-5 has a pretty darn good rep for reliability. Better than the C900 or 9000 ever had.
And remember that the 9000 has lots more "stuff" than a C900, and more stuff means more things to go wrong (I hate when people say that). And of course the 9-5 has even more "stuff".
