Just bought an '03 Arc and am new to this board. Before selecting this car, I drove just about every 9-5 option available (except for manual trannies), some Audis (A4s and A6s), some VW Passats, and some Volvo S60s (my wife drives an XC70 wagon). I really liked the Volvo--the seats are like lazy-boys, but the ride is harsh, the trannie is not smooth, and once I drove a 9-5, I easily ruled out all of the others. Why? The seats are very comfortable, the car is extremely well engineered, it has a smooth, though sporty ride, the powertrain is both refined and powerful, I like the interior and exterior styling, and there are so many well conceived ergonomic features such as the programmable ACC system, and speed sensitive stereo volume, just to name a few. Looking at used car values, I also found I could get a newer car with lower mileage for a given price than either an S60 or an A6. If you look at maintenance costs, too, both the Audi and th Volvo will cost you more over the long haul. My advice is to drive any make and model you would possible consider buying. I wouldn't be surprised if you too zero in on the 9-5. As for whether to go with an Aero or not, I ultimately chose an Arc V6 because I value comfort slightly over performance, and the Aero ride was a little too harsh for me. Although the Aero seats are awesome! Oh, and don't underestimate how great the ventilated seats option is, if you can find it on an Aero.
