Did you check other sources like Edmund's true market value and Consumer Guide's price ranges? Both are free online (search google), and I've found them to be closer to actual values that NADA or Kelly Blue Book, which are almost always several thousand dollars higher. Incidentally, KBB notes it's values are just the starting point for negotiations! When I've felt that the owner had grossly overvalued a car, I have printed out the Edmunds and KBB valuations. You should be able to at least get to the middle, if not close to the Edmunds value. Otehrwise, the particular car ought to be really good to justify a price premium. Things like extensive service records, or, in your case, maybe an engine with half the miles of the car, should push the price up a bit, and none of the valuations fully take into account those types of things.
