You need to put his advice into perspective. Clearly, the 9-5, like any other car, has its "issues." A clearly documented history, for any used car, is important for peace of mind, I think. For me, that means the CarFax shows it wasn't dropped into the harbor accidentally, no salvage title, etc. Then it's the internal Iris history: I wouldn't want to buy a used a 9-5 that seems to always in the shop for something significant.
We've owned three 9-5s, now. The 2000 LPT wagon had the ABS module failure - not a big deal anymore, if you read this board. In 45K of ownership, the wagon went through some light bulbs, a battery and some other small stuff. If it hadn't been rear-ended by some guy with a 2.5 BAC, we'd still be driving it. VERY reliable up to its untimely demise at 82K.
My '01 Aero sedan, now at 62K (acquired at 27K as a CPO), thus far has needed a new trunk wiring harness, a DIC (both done under warranty), and a water pump. That's it, except for oil changes, light bulbs, etc.
Our replacement wagon, an '04 Arc wagon, was a CPO purchase with 46K, single owner, all oil changes documented, nothing but routine stuff on the Iris report. I feel confident it will be just as reliable and trouble-free as it's predecessor.
SO, YMMV, but in my limited experience the 9-5 isn't any more problematic than other comparable vehicles.
