The '98 S/V70 series was subject to many problems too - they were recalled for electrical issues, and share the same A/C evaporator early death syndrome as the older 850. They use a similar Bosch ABS module as the Saabs - the difference is they've always had module-only replacements available, while Saab only sold the whole ABS system as a unit at 10x the cost, so Saab got the expensive-to-repair rep. But now you can get rebuilt ABS modules for Saab too.
Sludge isn't just Saab's problem - look at Toyota, Chrysler, Audi, and many others. Once you're aware of it, update the PCV, clean up any impending problems, and go to a 5k synth OCI, it's just not an issue any more.
I'd evaluate each vehicle on condition and decide which one I liked more - I certainly wouldn't rule out one over the other because one tech had a bad experience. A V70R is a heck of a nice car.
BTW The A/C in my '01 wagon whines a little, and has done so for the past 4 years. Not sure what "A/C issues" your tech is concerned about - maybe the Code 08 broken shaft problem? Again, originally Saab's fix was an 8-hour marathon of replacing the heater box (similar in scope to swapping a FWD Volvo A/C evap) but there is now an easy and cheap DIY fix.
A TSB is not a bad thing - it's just a note to the tech on how to handle an issue with the car - it's not a recall. I'd rather have that info on hand than have the company pretend there's nothing going on.
I think if you're used to maintaining a V70R a 9-5 Aero will have no surprises for you. The Aero has a more durable turbo and some say less chance of sludge due to full synth being specced from the factory.
