Coming out of a 9K (especially a NA car like your old one) and into a 9-5 Aero is quite a leap. I have a '96 9K and my wife has a '03 9-5 Linear SportWagon. I like it a lot, but we had it 4 months before I did a longish ride in it, so for a while I wasn't convinced.
It is NOT as powerful as my '96 CSE, but it has 15 bhp less and less torque. It is generally softer in feel and the seats are not quite as good. It's great on the highway at whatever speed and on windy back roads at extra legal speeds it is still very nice. I think I could go faster more easily on back roads in the 9K, but that doesn't mean the 9-5 couldn't keep up. I like the interior on both, but the rosewood dash in the 9K is nicer than the darker burl in the 9-5. The 9K is bigger, too, and I like that. I'd still rather the 9K on a long haul, but a 13 hour run in the 9-5 last summer (with 4 people) was pretty painless.
I like the 9K better, but I know it will age and probably get passed along to one of the kids, so I can see myself in a 9-5 next time. They are still very much a Saab, just more refined. It's sorta like when I got out of my '84 C900 and into the 9K. Still a Saab, but a whole new world. The 9K and 9-5 are equally good, just different. Just as long as they don't get GM or Toyota bland.
Agree on the green and diesel thoughts. Could really bring the division back and make Saab truly unique again.
