The EURONCAP tests which require higher safety standards than those currently in the States, placed the Saab 9-5 at the top of the mid-luxury segment, easily beating the Audi A6 the 5 series BMW, the E class Mercedes, and Saab's all time Nemisis, the new Volvo S80.
What surprised everyone on the judging panel was that the Saab 9-5 with it's now "dated" chassis (especially compared to very recent arrrivals like the S80) was safer than all the other cars in head-on collisions, and got a 100% rating for lateral impacts (something the 9-5 was capable of even before the newer inteligent side impact bags).
This just goes to show that Saab was always way ahead of the competition where safety is concerned and that their "U" shape absorption system at front and rear really does work. The "swinging" B pillar also makes the Saab 9-5 safer than other models - even without side bags!
