If there's sludge it isn't worth it. Also - how do you get an owner to let you drop the pan? That is a fair bit of work. I could see pulling the valve cover as a quick rudimentary check, but dropping the pan? Wow. I think the best approach is insist on a full service history and if it isn't there don't take the risk.
I purchased my 2001 at 67K and it had a poorly documented service history, so once I learned more about the sludge issue I started to worry. First I shortened my oil change intervals and went to full synthetic. Then at 90K I had the pan dropped for (along with installation of the pcv #6 kit).
There was in fact some minor sludge and blocking of the oil screen, which was cleaned. The mechanic was glad we did it, even though he didn't feel it was necessary prior to that. I think it might have been worse but my vehicles are used mostly on the highway, with very little stop and go or short trips.
I have decided not to worry about it but I do plan to keep the oil changed with full synthetic every 5K and have the pan dropped again at 150K if it makes it that far. I love the car but this is a troubling weak point. My 9000 was running perfectly when it was totalled at 140K. It burned no oil and was getting synthetic every 10-15K. Shame they changed that engine.
