There seem to be a lot of variables involved in development of sludge. Based on what I've read here, on chuck Andrew's site, and the rest of the web, driving habits, climate, maintenance, and quality of your unique engine parts, all affect whether or not sludge develops. Some people develop sludge despite frequent synthetic oil changes, for example. So, while good maintenance records are always a plus, they don't tell the whole story on sludge. You're wise to have the pan dropped.
When I bought, I ended up going with a V6 to avoid the issue.
