If the fluid looks good (pink) and smells good, get a case of AMSOIL synthetic ATF and drain, refill, drive a while to mix. Repeat the operation. Repeat the operation. After that, drain the pan and refill with new stuff about every 45-50,000 miles and you'll be fine.

On the other hand, if the fluid is dark/black and/or smells bad, get a case of Mobil 3309. Do the drain and refill at least three times so you have mostly fresh fluid in there. Then get a case of AMSOIL ATF and repeat the whole business.

That's what I've been doing to my Saabs since AMSOIL introduced synthetic ATF about 25 years ago.
