When I bought my first Saab (1969), I drove it from Madison WI to home. Not knowing the history, I took it to the service station where I had been getting my oil changed in my Plymouth. Sure enough, a bay was open.
I stood there with the service manual in hand while the "technician" pulled the plug and drained fluid. When he dropped the car back on and was ready to start filling with fresh oil, I asked him to pull the dipstick. He got a bit of an attitude--just drained the oil, why pull the dipstick. Asked him to humor me. He pulled the dipstick, and much to his surprise, the level read full! He had drained the gear lube. Of course, they didn't have the right viscosty gear lube in stock.
At that point, I figured I couldn't do any worse changing my own oil.
There is more difference between brands of synthetic oil than there is between brands of non-synthetic. I'm biased, since I've been using and selling AMSOIL for some 30 years now. If I couldn't, or wouldn't, get AMSOIL engine oil and filters, I'd use Mobil 1 oil and filters. Of the Mobil 1 choices, their extended drain formulation is better.
