Here's a little text out of the Saab 9-5 book by Anders Tunberg:

"As a different solution, we took in Oktober of '92, a good look at the platform with the "familyname" 2900 (what was to be platform of the NG900/9-3!!), which was being developed at the same time. This was a very irrational step. Which noone in the automotive industri had made before. Normally carmanufactures uses the platform of a larger car, to make a smaller model. We set out to do the opposite, by using parts from a smaller model on a larger"
