Wait for the son in law to come and visit....
So, this weekend I visit my mother in law, actually we went out on Friday night for dinner. She mentioned that there is this ding dong sound that her car makes every time she turns left, and would that have anything to do with coolant consumption (her reservoir was empty that morning). I couldn't understand the relationship so I asked her to let me drive her car. I check the engine before starting it and guess what....no coolant, not a single drop. So we go to the station get some coolant, fill it up and start to drive home...I have always liked her 9-5 Wagon with the V6, I like the sound and responsiveness of the engine (even though I have an Aero). This evening the car sounded like sht, a lot of knocking sounds and overall didn't sound right...I am driving on back roads to see what else I can hear in the car...thermostat is fine, turbo works, not odd sounds...I take a sharp RIGHT turn and there it is, ding dong, I look at the dash and the low oil pressure light comes on for a second. After that I noticed the ding dong would come on, but no lights....Odd I thought. Next morning, I went out to check the levels again...coolant was there, all of it, I added some water I didn't have the night before, and since this was a V6 I was a little confused about checking the oil...finally got it figured out and HUH?? It can't be dry....check again, and again, and again...BONE DRY!!!! I added 2-1/2 qts of oil before the level was back to where it should have been...after that, started the car, took it for a drive, made sure it warmed up, etc...the "odd" sound was gone, it now sounded almost like I remembered it did before. I drove the car and it felt fine....
I really hope that she didn't kill it...she mentioned that the ding dong has been going on for a week, and so has the coolant loss...no puddles in the driveway or anything, she had driven about 5000 since the last oil change, the engine compartment was dirty but no oil anywhere, the car has 145K on the odo....I figure I share with you all...
