5k intervals way too frequent

In my opinion. Just a waste of resources.
If a 9000 transmission (made of glass practically) can withstand longer intervals, and sometimes no changes at all, then a 9-5 automatic, which is a rock solid transmission by comparison, can withstand far longer intervals than 5k.
That's a good interval for engine oil but completely pointless in a transmission. Keep in mind that used ATF has to be disposed of someplace!
Personally I plan to keep to about 30k intervals using whatever damn Dex III I feel like throwing in there. Synthetic? Pfeh! Top quality? Pfeh! This transmission isn't going to care.
My 2000 V6 wagon might we worth $4000-$5000. It's not worth lots of money and worry to me, especially when these cars aren't known for grenading their transmissions like previous Saab models were. And even in all my 9000s I never had any transmission failures, luckily.
