Recirculation problem

Recently my 2000 9-5 Aero developed a problem with windows fogging up in cold weather. It soon became obvious that the ACC was stuck in "recirculation" mode; whenever I pressed the recirc button I couldn't hear the usual noise from the vent opening/closing.
So I took the car to my local Saab garage and they had a look at it. It turns out that the electric motor that opens/closes the recirculation vent was broken, and a new one (I hope you're sitting down...) would cost 700 EUR incl. VAT. By the time they've installed it the total invoice will be close to 1.000 EUR, i.e. more than 1.000 USD (and this in a car which by now has a market value of about 6.000 EUR)! Outrageous for just a small electric motor, if you ask me!
Does anyone know if it would be feasible to just leave the vent blocked in the open position? Is it difficult to get to it? Am I likely to mess it up or break something if I try myself? Or should I just stick to opening the windows now and again if I don't want to pay a grand to have the part replaced?
Regards,
Caspar
