OK I give up. How does one replace headlamps?

We recently replaced our totaled 1999 9=5 with a 2006 9-5 2.3T. We set off this afternoon for a trip knowing we would not be back before dark. Within a mile a headlamp failure message came on. I picked up a lamp at our local Advance Auto and struggled for 15 minutes trying to remove the burned out one. We returned home and made our trip with my trusty 9000 CSE.
It looks like one must remove the entire headlight assembly in order to change the driver's side lamp. How much of the grille and other parts must be removed to do this? Is there some other arcane way of getting at the lamps?
