I would stay away from the '03 9-3SS as it was the first year for that new model and is more prone to troubles. They are also small in the back seat compared to the 9-5. They are a more sporty, sharp-handling ride though.
The 2003 Arc was the last year for the V6 and a good year for the 9-5. The V6 in the 9-5 is a solid engine EXCEPT for ESSENTIAL to change the timing belt AND PULLEYS AND TENSIONER every 60k miles or risk terminal engine damage if the belt or one of the pulleys breaks. The V6 also has been known to have oil cooler leaks resulting in mixing oil and coolant. Performance options are more limited than the 4, and gas mileage is lower. They use the same fragile turbo as the Linear (low pressure turbo) 4, watch for blue smoke on startup. There was a recall for DI cassettes (shared with the 4).
Other than that the V6 is a great engine, smooth and quiet, and owners are happy with them. No sludge problems like the 4s.
