As I wrote recently, roving the gear shifter back and forth doesn't seem to be a good way to rule out a bad gear selector switch as it was in the old days with the NG900 when they went bad.
It may be a solder joint inside the switch that goes bad with heat creating a voltage drop big enough that the starter relay is not powered up enough.
One way is to find the outgoing wire from gear selector switch to starter relay and install a jumper wire there but this is kind of on a higher level and some mechanics even might be stumped in how to do it.
It is also dangerous if the person is not fully understanding in how it works since you will override the gear shifter which will make it possible to start the engine with shifter the D or R which can lead to bodily injury and loss of property.
Other people have taken the relay board down and made a makeshift bypass for the starter relay but that also involves some knowledge and removal of panels on driver side.
