I realized that, if I am going to ask for advice, I might as well give more info about the problem in case it's not the valve body.
The car will not start when it gear selector is in the park position. In order to start the car, I have to put it in neutral and it starts with no problem. When I move it from reverse to drive, the indicator by the speedometer actually says that it's in neutral, but it does move froward (after the slipping I noted above). After driving for about 5 mins, the indicator by the speedometer changes to indicate that it's in drive and the slipping problem goes away. When I move through the gears while stopped, the indicator light hops between R and N, even when it's down in 1 and 2. The cover on the gear selector is missing (i.e. you can see down into the notched metal part) in case that's relevant.
Any insight that anybody can offer would be greatly appreciated. I've searched around the BBs but can't seem to find somebody with a perfectly identical problem.
Thanks,
Jim
