We had a black '99 9-5. My brother-in-law made the observation that other colors don't reward you like black can. Spend some time washing and waxing it and it is dazzling. Stunning. A work of art. As soon as it rains I used to obsess, get out the towels, dry it off, try to get it back to that work of art level, My family worried about me.
We traded it in late last year for a metallic grey Aero. The reward factor is gone. Polish it up, I suspect, and it looks good. Not great, not a work of art, but a nice looking car. Let it get wet, snow on it, and it looks..... good! I've stopped obsessing, am able to spend weekend afternoons on other things, and my family is relieved.
But I did so like the look of a newly waxed black car. Just hard to maintain in New England in the winter.
