chassis# = VIN Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Thu, 10 Dec 2009 06:03:57 In Reply to: chassis#, milo, Wed, 9 Dec 2009 12:48:21 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Or, I should say, the last 8 digits of the VIN, comprising the model year (first digit), production line (second digit), and serial # (last 6 digits).
That tells them where in the production the car fits.
Now, they MAY need other information from the chassis plate under the hood. On it are codes for shocks, springs, etc, that can not be gotten from the VIN or Chassis #. The chassis # will tell them a given range, but the spring/shock codes get down to the specifics.
17 digit VIN for Saabs:
First 3 are the car manufacturer
Fourth is the model (E = 9-5)
Fifth is the trim level
Sixth is the # of doors (5 = wagon)
Seventh is the # of gears in a manual trans, OR 8 or 9 for the auto
Eighth is the engine code
Ninth is a calculated check digit
10th is the model year (2001-2009 = 1-9, A-B used before and after, with certain letters excepted)
11th is the production line
12th through 17th (6 places) is the serial # of the vehicle on that particular line (I'm still unclear if they count differently for 9-3s and 9-5s)
