I consider myself an expert on this subject! I have some past posts you can find. I've used the square bars and the C track bars extensively on my 9-5 and 9-3. I can honestly say the C track bars are the noisiest bars in existence on this planet! I love the look and I love the utility. The requirement to buy specialized mounting hardware for everything is a pain in the neck. I have so many Thule adapter parts kits I could start my own store!
But seriously, you have to use the Thule gasket material to seal off every little open space of the C track in order to alleviate as much noise as possible. I have so many pieces cut precisely to match whether I have one or two bike carriers, one or two ski carriers, etc. And then I've taped the underside with duct tape, where the feet attach so that those holes would not be exposed creating the infamous whistling sound.
About 2 years ago while in Denver shopping at REI, I ran into a Thule factory rep. He asked me if I had any questions on Thule products. I asked him why the C Track (aka Rapid Aero) bars were so noisy if they were supposed to be the latest and greatest. His comments where that they know, the bars are horribly noisy.
I have converted both of my cars back to the old style square bars....
Best of luck!
