When I was a kid we hauled one all over the West one year, around Canada the next, East the year after, etc. Nice having teachers for parents. They eventually graduated to a small motor home.

I'm talking a SMALL tent trailer. Some of those things are bigger than your car! It is getting hard to find a nice small one, but they are out there, and perhaps someone on this board can advise. My experience is way out of date.

Used is the only way to go cost wise, as new ones are pricy. Look for good canvas and make sure the top does not leak. Some models are much better at storage options and can be very handy. It is really nice to roll into a campsite, slide out the beds and pop the top and have a ready to live in home. Makes camping on rocks so much nicer....

Not too far back is a thread I started on trailers, and someone posted a photo of a very nice UHaul clamshell trailer that looks great. I've had good luck with UHaul in the past, renting utility trailers to haul dirt or stone for $10 or so per day. You may want to see what they would want to charge, and then you wouldn't have to store the trailer or worry about upkeep and breakdown.

I have a small sailboat (Laser) that has a small foot well that I carry my tents and other waterproofs. I fill my canoe with paddles, cushions, chairs and fishing rods. The canoe mounts on a frame upside down over the sailboat. It makes for a fairly compact haul, but does knock 3-5mpg off my mileage. I have thought about possibly making a plywood box and mounting it in place of the sailboat. So you could think about a used boat trailer, make a box and seal it with fiberglass, and weld a frame that could handle your canoe.

More conventionally, there are some small clamshell trailers out there, such as towed behind motorcycles. Think something aerodynamic or you will pay in drag and gas.

Generally, I think the minimum tire size for long travel is 12". If you can get wheels that you can mount a car tire to, I think they hold up much better. Keep the bearings greased and inspected, all those trailers you see broken down on the side of the road? Most are bearing probs.
