enough to grab onto. when I was a youngster and never bought replacement parts unless absolutely necessary, I changed the oil on my '83 900s for 10 years with vice grips!
if it's real cold there, the heating up could help "seat" the teeth into the warmer metal. could do that by running the engine for a while (or a torch of course). could seat them while warm then wait till cooler to attempt the turn. I'd just try them cold first. get them as tight as possible! and bang with a hammer on the vice grips too if needed.
good luck. something so simple can be so frustrating. happens to me all the time. I just cracked a toilet tank b/c I overtightened the tank bolts. one extra turn is costing me $60+ and a Saturday morning!
