The 1999-2001 9-5 design was headed up by the same guy who did previous Saabs + overlapped with previous Saab design leads going back to Saxon. In 2000 or thereabouts, GM parachuted in new guys, who, while probably good designers, had less connection to Saab history... this combined with GM beancounters has affected things imho: 2002-2005 got muddled a little but still ok. 2006+ is (imho) more ugly + cheapened by GM.
If I could plot a curve of 9-5 aesthetics vs time (1998-2010), it would continually decrease... at the same time, a plot of reliability vs time would increase... for me, there is an optimization point somewhere around 2004/05.
Sounds like the new domestics have improved a lot in reliability (and even aesthetics). Many older ones stunk. That said, I still see plenty of modern Asian cars around riddled with rust (holes even). This in spite of pro-Asian "reliability" owners telling me otherwise a few years ago. One of them has already done warranty rust repair work (2007 Honda Civic). Not much point having an indestructible engine in a body of swiss cheese... Not that modern domestics are much better (I've seen some pretty rotten Ford Focii, among others)... Our 20 year old c900s will outlast them all as will the 9-5...
