Last week, my 2000 Aero died going out my driveway. (68k, mobil I at 5k, car had been running maybe 2 minutes at that point, doing 10 m.p.h.) Read the board, swapped the CPS, no luck. Began to suspect the fuel pump, but didn't want to swap without confirmation. While looking for a fuel pressure tester, rented a code reader from parts store...showed P1230...throttle body...now we're getting somewhere. (Or so I thought.) Cleared the code and Bam, fired right up...surprise and elation are short lived...car starts to sound like a beater. I quickly drive inside the garage and listen with growing horror to the sounds my engine is now making. I notice fluid dripping out my tailpipe, shut down the car and find a fine mist of emulsification inside my oil cap. I fish around with the dipstick and eventually pull out a small glob of mayo.
I now know I have a leaking head gasket and I suspect it's starved for oil too...the top end sounded terrible.
So here's my question to those with greater expertise than I...has this car sh*t the bed? I can handle a head gasket, but I KNOW I lack the expertise to recognize the signs that it's just not worth doing in the first place...is this throwing good money after bad? (I'm hesitant to let the car fully warm up to do a compression test because I don't want to do more damage...there's got to be a smart way to proceed, here.) I know we are only generalizing, but I'd appreciate some advice from those who have been down this road before.
I keep my cars at least a decade and maintain them myself...never had anything like this happen before...I'm still a little shocked, but it is what it is. I'm gonna take my time and do this smart...so let me hear your angles on this one. (For what it's worth, this car has been my all time favorite...and I'm a long way from 16.)
Thanks,
Doug
