I'm don't think I'm wrong, but I'm certaily guilty of oversimplifying a rather complex topic. Turbos increase power primarily by shoving more air fuel mixture into a combustion chamber than a naturally aspirated engine can - somewhat the equivelent of increasing displacement, but only on demand in the case of the turbo. There is a degree of efficiency improvement in utilizing normally lost exhaust heat/pressure but that only amounts to a fraction of the 3-7% efficiency improvement in efficiency of the E85 fuelled vehicles. Much of that may have to do with the combustion characteristcs of ethanol vs gasoline.
Certainly a turbo engine is more efficient at full boost, but at non-full throttle positions it's not at full boost, regardless of the fuel octane. Most of my driving, sadly, is not done at full boost.
