Engine + auto trans mating = destruction, questions...

I'll just say right off the bat here that this isn't the smartest thing I've every done... So this all pertains to a 99 9-5 I got for free w/ a bad motor (looked like it ran quite awhile w/ almost no oil pressure, trashed crank, spun #3 main bearing, oil pressure relief *really* stuck in its bore - amazingly, it ran quite well, quiet except for some chain noise, no knocking...) So I got a B234 block and reassembled everything, all the way up until I was mating the engine + transmission back together, and in retrospect, I clearly did not have the torque converter seated all the way into the transmission. And wouldn't you know, it just doesn't take that much force when you're snugging it up with the bolts, which of course you shouldn't do but it was midnight and I was tired of manhandling the thing...
So the question - I can see something behind the torque converter seal that looks shattered, I am assuming this is the key or whatever that drives the oil pump? Short version of the question: what did I break, and what's the easiest way to fix it?
Longer: I removed the bolts from the circular cast piece that the torque converter seal lives in, but there is no clear way to remove it. I am imagining that the pump is behind this housing and could actually come out the front, without disassembling the rest of the trans. True? Or just wishful? Also, I managed to find a poor exploded diagram on the interweb, looks like the pump is a gear-type thing, is the key I broke on one of the gears, or on something else?
Thanks, hope somebody else reads this and avoids a similar fate :)
