So the bell housing has a number of bolts (and 4 nuts), 4 or 5 are inside the part of the casting where the torque converter lives. They are not all the same length. There are 2 locating pins. There is a small bracket, more a stamped-metal wire guard that is bolted between the bell housing and main transmission housing which must be removed, and also the dipstick bracket is bolted to the main housing. I set the whole thing vertical and lifted the bell housing off the rest of the transmission. The dipstick and vent tube come with. There is a tight slip-fit bore in the bell housing for one bearing race (like the front cover of old C900 turbo transmissions w/ the bearing at the lower chain sprocket), so the casting has to be slowly walked off the bearing. The differential carrier bearing race stays in the housing, and the differential will just stay where it is.

There are a number of bolts securing the pump housing to the center trans casting, these are obvious. After removal, the pump housing slides off the stack. The pump housing is 2 castings, the front is cast iron (which is what you see behind the torque converter when everything is assembled), the rear is aluminum and captures 2 clutch packs. The rear housing is bolted to the front one from the rear with 3 torx bolts, and (here is the annoying part) has 2 locating pins which are staked (!) into the aluminum. Prying, hammer, and using a puller have thus far been unsuccessful. Tomorrow, I think I'll grab a drill and try to remove just enough material to free up the pins... According to the exploded diagram, the pump gears are between the 2 housings and the "pump plate," which appears to be a thin piece of steel with a bunch of holes in it.

So far, nothing else appears broken or otherwise mangled. The inside of the transmission was clean as a whistle, light wear was evident on the differential carrier bearings and on some bronze bushings, otherwise, everything appears to be in good shape, especially for 170k miles... Fingers crossed I get the pump housings separated tomorrow and nothing is broken except the gears...
