according to our local thule/yakima dealer, the thule bars swell a bit with time (basically as they rust under the rubberized coating)... this swelling makes the towers hard to fit on... "might need a new set of rails"...
well, first I tried an old pair of bars (I have 3 sets of thule + 1 set of yakima - I do this a lot!)... no luck, so I tried another set I have crossroads feet on (for wagon rails)... no rust but just as bad... I think it is the hinge in the tower that makes a wedge shaped hole for the rail + binds as you push it on (scrunches the rubberized plastic coating)... the crossroads has a fixed hole for the rail + worked perfectly on every rail I have... no binding whatsoever...
If I stumble upon a set of saab 9-5 factory bars used, I will pick them up... these 400 series towers are junk...
(I think I'm partly grumpy because I missed out on an awesome deal on a pair of Yakima Highrollers today)...
