Well, I called the local high-end collision shop and they gave me the name of their go-to guy for alloy repair.
I had an interesting conversation with him. He said he was working on a set of BBS RK-II's, and was well aware of what's involved in reconditioning them. He knew all about the proper disassembly/reassembly with bolt retorquing, etc. Here's what he said:
These BBS wheels are forged aluminum, very expensive to manufacture - and - because of their construction, impossible to powder-coat successfully due to the temperature needed to cure the powder-coat paint, 400 degrees or so. He said that anything over 200 degrees would somehow deform the forged aluminum.
After cleaning and polishing the lip and removing the gunk from the rim itself, he said that he uses a high-tech enamel paint designed to cure within the wheels max temperture range. The result would be guaranteed for the life of the wheel. No clear-coat needed, but periodic cleaning of the paint (and waxing) suggested.
Does this sound right? Price would be $600 for the set of 4 wheels.
