Thanks for the confirmation. So maybe this guy's on the up and up.
Locally, there are only 2 wheel refinishers that any of the high-end collision shops recommend. The first one is the AWRS franchisee - and even some of the people who recommend him admit without any prompting that he's kind of "flaky" as far as reliability is concerned.
The other guy, an indy wheel shop who correctly identified the particular problem with the BBS wheels, is also described as kind of "unusual" by a couple of collision shops. This "unusual" guy has an unfinished website, and a Google search only produces one "review" by someone who is obivously a disgruntled customer. As far as I can tell, he's pretty much a one-person operation.
The bottom line is my (originally) CPO'd Aero came with these "fancy" wheels, and now I have to figure out whether to have them refinished without spending $1000, or to just buy some other decent alloys and sell the BBS wheels, as-is. I like the BBS wheels, but maybe all of this refinish stuff is just too much trouble and expense for me...
