koni perches + nuts... Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Sat, 19 May 2012 19:04:48 In Reply to: Re: Read shock bolts reusable? You might have seen my comments. I was using Koni yellows (I believe these are called sports). Also 2004 Arc, but a Sedan. A few comments for you:
Saabsince93b is a huge asset here wrt to the suspension issues... that said, I measured the distance from the centerline of the lower bolt to the resting surface of the spring for the OEM shock I took off, and for the Koni Yellows on the lower perch. They are identical within measurement error. See link below. The upper perch on the konis I have is way higher. FSD might be different though! If you have FSD's you can make the same measurement + compare with my numbers (and also with the OEM shocks if you haven't tossed them yet). Given what saabsince93b says, I'd speculate the FSD's might be different than the yellows, but measure to know for sure.
I think it is common to reuse the lower bolts. Saab says not to, but our dealer was pretty clearly re-using them (they looked at me like I had 3 heads when I dropped by to pick up a pair of bolts - I'm anally retentive)...
The top nuts on the sports for the back were not nylon on mine, and there were 2, and they needed to be tightened together... I made the mistake of not using lock-tite.... I've tightened a bazillion nuts together like that in the past and never had them come undone... except on one side of our car the first time around! the nuts came off, the upper rubber parts + washers came off... and there was a whole heck of a lot of looseness + clanging happening back there. Suffice it to say, both sides are locktited now... I would absolutely procure new nylon fasteners if that is what came with the konis + they should be readily available from places like fastenal. Check with koni re the thread spec first (if it's not in the documentation that came with the shocks). If I was not using lock nuts, I would use a pair of normal nuts + loctite.
My final advice wrt ride height... drive the car around a little before you measure it (after assembly) and before you get the car aligned. Look for speed bumps. I was amazed how much it can settle the first day or so... Also I have not found that it is a 1:1 correlation between spacer height and ride height. There are enough parts being compressed that it seems to be that you get less. I added 10mm spacers to the rear the second time around and it added significantly less than 10mm to the actual height... which is ok by me anyway because my front is also a little lower than spec + there is no easy way to correct that.
Get a Saab indy to align the car when all is said + done. Ours aligns for less camber than spec.
good luck!
