2006 is pretty new, but not so new that I would bother going and getting everything done at a dealer... so... there are 2 types of parts you'll need: ones you can replace with used (eg from a junkyard), and ones you need to buy new. As time passes, the availability of used parts (in junkyards) will increase, and will eventually decrease once your 2006 is so old nobody drives them anymore (not there yet on our c900's). Most new parts you need are available at places like eeuro. Suppliers will find a way to meet the demand of commonly needed parts because it is lucrative, though the cost of some parts might go up. Uncommonly needed parts are probably uncommonly needed because they rarely fail and can therefore come from a junkyard.
So basically, I wouldn't worry too much. I have a 2004, a 1989, and a 1993, and have no concerns + have had no issues wrt parts availability on any of our cars. If your mechanic friend is not a Saab guy, it may just be lack of knowledge/fear that is expressed in his views (eg, the old "go buy a Chev" line)...
and wrt should you sell - these cars aren't worth a lot now. dealer trade values are apparently really really low for Saabs since the bankruptcy. What would you be able to buy with that kind of money to replace it? If the car is working, why bother?
