Back in the 80s it was every 30k. In the 90s they went to every 60k. That was still the recommended interval until they got rid of them altogether. They are now built into the pump. I tried to get one apart on a failed pump once without breaking it. It's not possible once the plastic has been in the tank a few years.
In 25 years I don't think I have ever actually fixed a driveability problem.
