They did go to a larger filter when they extended the change interval.
By rights the "high filtration" filter should catch more stuff and thus need changing more often.
Per the Walbro fuel pump engineer who talked at SOC06, the in tank filters feature a screen type prefilter that is sort of self cleaning (I guess there's a holding bin or something below the screen - John, you would have seen it) that catches most of the stuff. The in-tank filter was pretty much mandated by more stringent emission regulations covering vapor release. He said that the filter connections release enough vapor to "use up" about half the total allowance. I questioned that number given the banjo bolt seals that Saab uses, and was told that the bean counters had nixed that b/c of the time to install and expense - they insist on clip type installation. As for the in-tank filter being integral to the pump, he also said that some companies have the pump and filter sealed inside the tank - plug a fuel filter, and you need a whole new assembly! All this is instead of requiring vapor recovery mechanisms on gas station fuel nozzles, which would have met the same goal.
