With the right tools I can pull a axle in my driveway quite quickly. Its a messy job but I always inspect my CV boots during tire rotations, brake work, etc. Any sign of cracking I replace the boot. The only special tools you really need is a snap ring pliers, CV joint boot pliers, and some degreaser. Also, lots of paper towels and some CV joint lube.
My method has always been to remove the wheel, rotor, and caliper. Then just disconnect the 2 strut to knunckle bolts and pry down to release the CV.
My CV's on my 9000 lasted to 160k before I pulled them and replaced them due to cracking.
