Yes, that is an anomaly that the newer versions with updated software would die just like that and it is probably coupled with that the owner have ignored the Check Engine light and the fault codes building from 1 code to 2 codes to 3 codes showing P-1312, 1334 and 0340 before it finally gave up the ghost.
Even though not perfect, it is still not that much worse than an ignition distributor rotor that suddenly burned through making the engine die.
Cap, rotor and wires were usually a service item I replaced every 60K miles. Just those three items are $152.00 list nowadays.
