don't you just tighten the assembly up with the spring compressed and then release the spring? not sure how feasible that would be to do after the fact with the shock in the car. Be careful.
The sway bar links will for sure clunk if they are worn and may not look badly worn and still be a problem. However, they might not clunk for every bump. As Vicsaero said, make sure they are bolted on tight (there's a torque spec in the wis iirc).
