Clutch Repair Chain - $1,900 - Advice / Suggestions?

I am in a really tight spot with my '00 9-5 Aero w/160k on it, which is still a daily driver for us.
The clutch on the car one day started sticking on the floor, and a day later, the car could not be pulled out of gear. My indy (Swedish Auto Specialists in San Marcos, CA) felt the repair needed was a clutch master cylinder ($340 w/labor). Then a couple days later he said we needed a new clutch hose as well ($150 w/labor) -- I had to wait for that to get shipped across the country.
We picked up the car Friday and weren't 2 miles from the shop before the clutch completely went to the floor and did exactly the same thing. After a tow back, the shop said we need a full clutch done (an additional $1,400).
This puts me in a really tight spot. A sudden $1,900 investment into this car does not seem like money well spent, though I have searched high and low all weekend and can't really find any suitable used car readily available to replace it.
Is there anything that could be missing in this equation I could consider or does this flow of events seem par for the course? Am wondering if I should to the car to another shop for a second opinion/additional estimates, or if I should try to negotiate a better price.
Any advice or opinions on whether I should fix or do anything would be appreciated.
