The 2014 Ford Fusion Plug in Energi starts at $34,700 & the Non Plug in Starts at $27,280 (Ford USA website today). The add ons and upgrades are comparable so the $7,420 difference can be attributable to the larger plug in battery. There is a $4,007 income tax credit (up to 2016) based on the battery size (up to $7,500 for Chevy Volt, Tesla etc).
The difference $7,420-$4,007=$3,413 needs to be recouped by gas savings to make it pay.
My example for 1,063 miles for 10.53 Gallons (assume $3.65 PA prices) is $38.43. The 171 kWh electricity for the same distance 15.8c KWh (Philly area) = $27.02 for a total of $65.43 for 1,063 miles.
For a non plug in to achieve the same cost/distance it would need to use $65.43/3.65 or 17.93 gallons. 1,063 miles /17.93 gallons = 59.28 MPG.
I don't know what the "true road" MPG of the Non Plug in Fusion is but the EPA lists it at 44 MPG Combined. To recoup the $3,413 cost differential (after Tax Rebate) in gas savings you would need to save $3,413/$3.65 = 935 gallons of Gas. This would take the non plug in 41,143 miles before it used more in gas than the price difference.
So effectively the Plug In has paid for itself in three years of average driving assuming the used car has absolutely no retail premium.
One thing I did not factor in is state rebates (PA gives a $1,000 rebate for EVs with a battery under 10Kwh) & $2,500 for over 10kWh). I believe there are states with higher rebates
