If you poke around these boards, one of the ways to double or triple the life of the bypass valve is to disconnect and plug off the vacuum line that goes to it. There are seals in it and when they actuate there are sharp plastic edges that eventually cut the seals and make them leak. If vacuum lines that actuate the valve are plugged, it can't actuate and the seals won't come into contact with the sharp edges. We have 140k+ on our 9-5 and still no leak from the deactivated bypass valve. For you it's too late, but if you put in a new valve, consider deactivating it. As others have said, it has little effect on the AC.
