Glad you got it. Yes it probably works that way too. I cut along your line and then pry off pieces of the thermostat with a screw driver.
You also have to loosen the bolt a couple of turns holding the pipe to head but the good thing is you don't have to remove the bolt or the pipe that is in a Chinese knot syndrome with the engine lift bracket and oil dipstick tube.
Putting all back together is easy when all is lubed up and clean.
I try to bolt down things in unison so I don't apply too much side pressure or tweak the pipe and thermostat housing too much risking a leak passed the double o-rings.
