If I recall correctly, the smaller cable is pretty integrated with the main cable. I'm sure you could find a way to rig a jumper permanently, but I wonder if the issue you are bypassing in your test is corrosion in the cables near the terminal end near where the smaller leg shunts off. Before going crazy trying to rig something up, test the voltage drop on the main cable and consider replacing the whole thing. You may be getting enough power down the cable to crank, but not enough to crank and fire the fuel system concurrently, consistently. These cars are very sensitive to electrical power fluctuations.
Just my 2 cents. i couldn't get over the difference in starting I had when I replaced my cable.
EDITED: Fixed a couple spots where Apple helped me with spelling.....yeesh.
