the old red ones left me roadside a couple of times, they gave no warning. One commonality with the black ones that threw codes was burnt epoxy smell and a crack in the potting material in approximately the same location, I think around plug #3. But it already went in the trash.

You have been fortunate. As a bit of experiment, I drove the last one about a week after the code/CEL appeared emboldened by a T30 driver and new spare in the trunk. Near the end of the week the car finally started misfiring under load or near WOT. When I replaced it there was a crack about an inch long in the potting material in the same location as the others. Car has been running great with the new one, and no more codes or CEL.

My mech. thinks the extreme heat down here kills them early, he sees similar replacement intervals with other local Saabs. I think 60k is the longest I had one in there on an 00 9-3 SE I had.

At least they are easy to replace, and now, quite a bit less expensive. I never tried one of the Chinese or Pro Parts DI's, or one of the blue ones that were being sold for awhile, too much negative stuff in these forums about them. I began to worry about availability 2-3 years back during the Great Saab Parts Crisis where the prices shot up to over 500.00 and supply was dwindling. I finally found one for about 320.00 at CarQuest thanks to a tip here from MIRoger, Eeuro was out and my dealer could not get them anymore. Jim Ellis (Atlanta) even had them backordered.

These parts have been my 3 Saabs disposable diapers. Maybe I can say the same of those idler pulleys. I just replace all of them every 60k to keep from roadside breakdowns. So far, so good.

I have been impressed with the engine and turbo durability on these cars though. Hard for me to believe some of the failures posted here...but, they are real...maybe cheap oil or extended changes, or inadequate PCV/oil trap plumbing? Have not had the sludging problems either. But I do 90% highway driving, maybe that helps.
