If it's the coils that are failing then it can be a very quick death. I experienced that on my 1999 where you could smell the burning and it left me stranded . It was just beyond warranty so I removed the DI and took the smelly thing and plunked it down on the Saab dealers service mgr desk and to my surprised he good willed the repair. To my surprise and delight that DI lasted 130k and some 10 yrs and was working when I sold the car.
There are other components in the DI that can fail more gradually, such as the charge capacitor. I don't think anyone has ever posted what exactly the SW predictability alogrithym was all about, if it just lowered the misfire CEL threshold then in some cases the CEL could be erroneous.
IMO it is the after shutdown heat that takes a toll on both the battery and the DI - not sure why the cooling fans don't go on more post shutdown, they did on my old 1986 9000.
I regrease those serp belt pulleys at 80k and will run them to 120k where I will check for uneven wear and replace if needed. Likewise a serp belt with dressing applied will last well over 100k.
Remember also to clean you MAF periodically on the 9-5.
